A late fight back late in the second half by SKOB was not enough to get the points as De La ran out deserved 10 point winners at Waverley Oval today.
It was a case of dirty déjà vu for SKOB today as once again they were held goalless in the first quarter by De La just as they had in Round 15 last year. Although the margin wasn’t as great and SKOB were able to come back this time - it still proved a bridge too far with the home team always able to find a goal to keep a safe distance on the scoreboard.
The early 1:30 start seemed to catch SKOB napping as De La put on 4 goals to nil. 7 changes to the side from the previous game didn’t help the SKOB cause and may have contributed to their tardy opening but there were no excuses offered. The home team were simply more desperate early on in front of a solid crowd on hand on an important day for both clubs.
At half time SKOB had only managed to score a single goal and the score line of 40 to 11 was always going to be hard to reel in. They were able to step things up a bit more late in the third term and at the final change there was a mathematical hope for SKOB, and they opened the final quarter with some momentum. Although they had more of the play in the final term kicking 5 goals to 2 SKOB were never able to get closer than 10 points and when De La scored to make it 16 points with a few minutes left, all hope of a unlikely victory was dashed. Again SKOB came and scored a goal to bring it back to 10 points but they ran out of time in the end. Again, it was Kanakis, Hodges and Lloyd in the top 3 performers for SKOB on the day, and they were well supported by Critchley and Ross in defence, whilst Shaun Kennedy was good up forward.
De La were deserved victors and they win back the Anthony Molan Cup.
